New Comprehensive Sex Ed Program Challenged in Court

Opponents of a new sex education curriculum in Montgomery County, Maryland have brought their case to the Montgomery Count Circuit Court in hopes of blocking the program. The new curriculum, which was unanimously approved by the Montgomery County Board of Education in January, includes information about homosexuality, gender identity, and proper condom use for 8th and 10th graders. Previously, teachers were instructed to discuss such subjects only in reference to specific questions by students.

Among those that oppose the new comprehensive program is a group calling themselves Citizens for Responsible Curriculum. In 2005 the organization won a court battle over the issue, and is now receiving legal support from the Michigan based Thomas More Law Center.

The new curriculum is scheduled to be taught county-wide this fall.
