Indonesian Government Demands Evidence of Mass Rapes
Several Indonesian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have publicized the systematic rape of approximately 150 women of ethnic Chinese origin during May 1998 riots, in which more than 1,000 people were murdered.
The Indonesian government has accused these NGOs of "spreading rumors" and plan to question all those who continue to claim that the mass-rapes occurred. Police chief Lieutenant-General Roesmanhadi said that persons who could not provide "proof" that the rapes occurred would be questioned.
