U.S. Marine Convicted of Raping Japanese Woman

A military court convicted Lance Cpl. Ricardo Gomezarroyo, 21, of raping a Japanese woman on June 28.

The woman had been visiting another serviceman and was alone in a barracks room in western Japan when Gomezarroyo attacked and assaulted her. She was brought to a U.S. military clinic and treated after other soldiers found her.

As punishment, Gomezarroyo lost his rank, pay, and all allowances, was given a dishonorable discharge, and sentenced to six years in prison.

Gomezarroyo will not be charged by Japanese authorities because the woman chose not to report the rape.
