Congressional Women’s Caucus Meets with UN Officials on Global Women’s Issues

Members of the Congressional Women’s Caucus, led by co-chairs Juanita Millender-McDonald (D-CA) and Judy Biggert (R-IL), met with officials at the United Nations yesterday, including UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, to discuss issues affecting women globally, including the issue of education for Afghan women and girls. The nine-member delegation of U.S. House Representatives also discussed the need for humanitarian assistance for women refugees, the sexual exploitation of children, and the crisis in the Middle East. Of the meetings, Congresswoman Millender-McDonald said, “[I]t brings about a better dialogue, it brings about a cohesive agenda for us in the Congress and the women in the United Nations.” The Congressional Women’s Caucus, according to Congresswoman Biggert, is placing much more emphasis on global women’s issues and is planning to visit Afghanistan in May to assess the situation for women and girls more clearly.
