Afghan Women’s Summit Begins in Brussels

Women leaders from Afghanistan and around the world convened in Brussels yesterday for the beginning of a three-day conference on the role of Afghan women in the reconstruction of Afghanistan. Conference attendees, including representatives from the Feminist Majority Foundation, pledged to work together to ensure that women have a significant voice in the rebuilding of Afghanistan. Prominent members of the United Nations and the European Union delivered statements of support to Afghan women. “We are here to show solidarity,” said Mary Robinson, United Nation High Commissioner for Human Rights. “Whatever government emerges from the talks in Bonn, we must ensure full participation of women.”

According to FMF delegate, Norma Gattsek, Afghan delegates expressed optimism and determination that a brighter and more empowering future for Afghan women is in store. Gattsek also reported that the talks were productive and focused in their proceedings. The summit is expected to yield a formal demand for the inclusion of Afghan women in an interim Afghan government.
