Afghans Could Mistake Bombs for Food Rations

The U.S. began radio broadcasts in Afghanistan instructing Afghan civilians on how to differentiate between yellow-packaged food rations and yellow-colored cluster bombs, both being air dropped. The address, in Dari and Pashtu, states that food is being dropped far away from bombing sites, so yellow shaped objects near bombing sites should be avoided or approached with extreme caution. The radio address unleashed more skepticism of the U.S. food drops. Many Afghans do not own radios, which have been banned by the Taliban, and therefore will never hear the U.S. warnings. Also, many Afghans have always been fearful of the food drops as the Soviets used cluster bombs during their war with Afghanistan that were also yellow in color.
