Scholar Notes Systematic Repression of Women and Girls in Afghanistan
Earlier this week at a policymaker’s forum on Capital Hill William Maley, viewed as one of the world’s leading scholars and experts on Afghanistan, spoke of the Taliban’s systematic and repressive policy towards women. Maley noted that for the first time women’s and human right’s issues are “entangled” and a serious consideration in the politics of international recognition and policy formulation. Her urged, “people should not miss the depth of the systematic repression,” pointing to the devastating psychological effects of Taliban policy towards women and girls. He warned US policymakers against diversion on the issue of Afghanistan and urged for responsible and long-term foreign policy formulation.
