The response of a Hindu leader concerning the rape of four nuns in India last week outraged Indian Christian groups.
Baikunth Lal Sharma, a senior official of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), reportedly described the rape as the consequence of Hindu anger over conversions. It is widely known that the VHP often struggles with Christian groups in a campaign against what it deems "conversion of Hindus through allurement."
Christian priests believe the incident was not isolated. A number of other incidents, including attacks on missionaries in the western state of Gujarat, have been reported. Bishop Vincent Concessao, the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Delhi, said, "It (the rape) was not just one incident. There have been a series of incidents."
Concessao also said that Hindu fundamentalists brought on security threats to Christian missionaries through their campaign techniques.
