Florida Bans Affirmative Action for State Colleges
Gov. Jeb Bush and the Florida Cabinet voted 4-2 to approve Bush's One Florida plan on Tuesday, making Florida the first state to voluntarily ban affirmative action programs for women and minorities in state colleges.
Bush's plan states that students who graduate in the top 20 percent of their high school class and complete a college preparatory curriculum will get into one of the 10 state universities. The changes, approved by the state's public university governing body, the Board of Regents, will take effect immediately.
Students, lawmakers, and women's groups had protested the anti-affirmative action plan prior to Tuesday's vote. Opponents of the One Florida anti-affirmative action plan vowed to keep fighting.
