Anti-Rape Ad Pulled in South Africa

On October 4, a panel defended itself against criticism for outlawing an anti-rape television commercial because it offended men. In the ad, South African actress Charlize Theron responds to her own question about “what South African men are like” by citing rape statistics. According to South African police, South African women are nearly three times as likely to be raped as women in the United States---an alarming 64,000 women and girls per year. After the commercial aired for two months on three broadcasting stations, 28 men complained to the Advertising Standards Authority. The ad must be changed or withdrawn within 48 hours after the panel decision. The Rape Crisis group in Cape Town who sponsored the ad said it would appeal.
