Celebrities Hail Anti-Impeachment Message

Celebrities including Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison, women's rights activist Gloria Steinem, actor Alec Baldwin, Nobel Peace laureate Elie Wiesel, Caroline Schlossberg Kennedy, novelist Mary Bordon, and others spoke at an anti-impeachment rally organized by Americans Against Impeachment and held Monday at New York University Law School.

Steinem called attention to the hypocrisy of the right wing, saying, "My fear is that the right wing is succeeding in destroying sexual harassment law in the same way they destroyed affirmative action legislation. They are using this law to assassinate the president when sexual harassment law has nothing to do with welcome sex," said Steinem.

New York democrat and Judiciary Committee member Rep. Jerry Nadler said, "Impeachment was never seen as a punishment for crimes; impeachment was seen as a defense of the republic or liberty against a president who had become a tyrant."

Rev. Paul Moore, former Episcopal Bishop of New York, talked of his fear that impeachment proceedings would cripple the nation and prevent it from dealing with issues crucial to our nation's strength and well-being. More predicted, "...Millions of people will suffer and die because the Republican Congress wants to get President Clinton for a personal sin."
