U.N. Negotiating With Taliban to Return Staff to Afghanistan

The United Nations is currently negotiating with the Taliban in an effort to reinstate U.N. staff in Afghanistan.

The U.N. and many private aid agencies left Afghanistan several weeks ago due to security concerns. The U.N. is requesting that the Taliban provide several guarantees of their staff's safety and hopes to move staff there by mid-October.

U.N. Coordinator for Afghanistan, Alfredo Witschi-Cestari, said that the United Nations humanitarian programs are currently being carried out by Afghan nationals. He said the issue of women is one of the central issues that prevents the return of U.N. Staff. The Taliban has denied U.N. staff the opportunity to aid women, causing "fearful consequences" for their health.
