Affirmative Action Rally at U Penn Draws 200

Nearly 200 students at the University of Pennsylvania gathered on Thursday to rally in support of affirmative action for women and minorities. The rally was organized as a part of "Call to Action 2000," a nationwide day of action in support of affirmative action policies and was co-sponsored by groups such as the United Minorities Council, UMOJA, the Asian-Pacific Student Coalition.

Other groups represented at the rally were Penn Students Against Sweatshops, the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Alliance and Sangam, a South Asian progressive activist group.

UMC Chairman Jerome Byam, a Junior at U Penn, spoke of affirmative action as "leveling the playing field for all people, not just African Americans, but also Hispanics, Asians, homosexuals and women."
