Natural Family Planning, the birth control method approved by the Catholic church, actually does involve carefully monitoring the signals of the body to determine fertility. It is not the rhythm or calendar method. There are classes and books available for those who wish to learn it, as it is complicated.

Laura, I suspect you're right that one of the reasons Fertility Awareness isn't more widely taught (and practiced) is based on the assumption that it's too complicated for some. I don't think it's too complicated, but it *does* require diligence, discipline, and a degree of openness with one's sexual partner that, frankly, not all couples have. For some women, the pill or an IUD is a better choice for precisely those reasons.

There's also a common misunderstanding that Fertility Awareness is the same thing as the so-called rhythm method, although I would hope that misperception is not common among health care providers and sex educators.

This is fascinating, if only because of the general lack of knowledge about our reproductive systems. I bought the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" and can't understand why it isn't taught to every woman. I knew more about how to fix a computer than how my body functioned! I presume they don't teach fertility awareness because they assume it's too complicated for some people? Please!!!
